Ajax opponent Benfica in crisis after defeat against eternal rival

The problems of Benfica got a little bigger on Thursday evening. O Glorioso, opponent of Ajax in 2022 in the eighth final of the Champions League, lost the Portuguese classic 3-1 against FC Porto.

At the top of the Premier League Benfica was number three ahead of Portugal’s biggest game and needed an away win over Porto to stay connected. That had to happen without trainer Jorge Jesus, who was fired by the club board of the formation from Lisbon after an argument with captain Pizzi.

That did not cause a shock effect, because after 37 minutes Benfica was again trailing 2-0 in the Estádio do Dragao. Porto took a simple lead via Fábio Vieira and Pepe, but it became tense shortly after the break. Roman Yaremchuk made it 2-1, but the joy at Benfica was short-lived.

André Almeida took a red card in minute fifty and fifteen minutes later Mehdi Taremi decided the game by making it 3-1. There was no change in that position and so Benfica, which will play two matches against Ajax in 2022, is now facing a seven point deficit behind leader Porto and number two Sporting.
