Sergiño Dest has been named Talent of the Year by the technical staff of Ajax. The right back, which has recently been explicitly linked to Bayern Munich and Barcelona, succeeds its competitor Noussair Mazraoui as the greatest talent from the ranks of Ajax. “Phew, really great! I am really surprised. Seriously, this is really a very nice surprise”, Dest responds opposite Ajax Life, the club’s supporters association.
It is the third time in a row that a player from the rear of Ajax has won the Marco van Basten trophy for Talent of the Year, after Matthijs de Ligt and Mazraoui received the prize in 2018 and 2019 respectively. In the preparation for the 2019/20 season, Dest advanced to the first team and immediately forced a starting place under coach Erik ten Hag. In his first season for Ajax, the American international came to 36 official matches, in which he scored 2 goals and 6 assists.
“I didn’t see it coming at all,” said 19-year-old Dest. “I was training and heard that I would have an interview afterwards, but it was not said for what. Suddenly I saw the trainer with a trophy in his hands and it turned out to be for me! I did not know at what price it was but it quickly became clear to me. This is really beautiful. “
That the technical staff of Ajax Dest has chosen as the greatest talent, gives the fullback extra satisfaction. “That certainly tells me that I am a valued force. I feel very honored by it anyway. It is just an extra drive for me to go even further, because I want to win many more prizes.” Dest felt quickly during the preparation last year that he could hook up at the level of Ajax 1.
“Yes, I quickly felt that I was doing the right thing,” says the back right. “You know that quickly, so it felt nice. Quincy Promes was also new and he gave me a lot of confidence. He told me to remain calm and said that I should continue with what I did, because then I think he will remain in the selection. I think I played almost all exhibition games and it went pretty well in that. “
