Airbus A380 Performs Unusual Maneuver over Frankfurt Due to Technical Defect

A technical defect has forced an Airbus A380 to perform an unusual maneuver en route from Singapore to London.

An Airbus A380 from the Australian airline Qantas came closer to Frankfurt Airport on Thursday than originally planned. Due to a technical problem, the plane, which was traveling from Singapore to London, had to initiate a rapid descent over the airport.

According to the flight portal “Aviation Herald”, the reason for the loss of altitude was the failure of the autopilot, which automatically steers and stabilizes the plane. The autopilot is an important system that relieves the pilot and ensures compliance with the prescribed flight altitude. Without an autopilot, the crew must fly manually and fly at a lower altitude.

Technical problems over Frankfurt

The machine was at an altitude of around 12,200 meters (FL400) when the autopilot failed around 111 kilometers south-east of Frankfurt. The pilots reacted immediately and reduced the flight altitude to 8,500 meters (FL280). After fixing the technical problem, they continued their flight to London, where they landed safely, with a delay of 80 minutes.

The passengers on board the Qantas flight QF-1 should not soon forget the short detour to Frankfurt, even if there was no reason to panic.
