Aid from Cáritas Mallorca: Ana Sofía’s Struggle in Spain

Ana Sofía is 46 years old and is from Peru. He has been in Spain for seven months. He currently has no job because he is in an irregular administrative situation. She and her daughter receive different aid from Cáritas Mallorca. It is one of the families that, within an agreement with the Eroski chain, They use the “purse card” of Caritas for the purchase of food and other basic necessities.

“I have been in Spain for seven months, where I am with a daughter and a grandson. It was very difficult for me to leave my country, but the situation in Peru was untenable,” explains Ana Sofía. I live in Inca, in Mallorca, and I hope to find a job, although, due to paper issues, it is a bit difficult”.

Ana Sofía acknowledges that her life here is complicated. “It is not easy because of the rise in prices. One has to start cutting other expenses and think about what things you should no longer buy. The issue of housing is a very complicated thing, both to rent and to raise all that money to be able to pay the rent. That takes almost everything and it is a very difficult issue for us, who are immigrants. We can no longer eat meat. We eat what is cheaper, it can be tuna or rice. We don’t eat that many vegetables either, just boiled potatoes. We try to balance to reach with the money the little you can get ”, recognize this Peruvian woman.

Finding Cáritas was, for her, “an experience that came from God.” “I came from asking for help from a person who did not give it to me. They gave me a telephone number and I was able to speak with a very kind lady, who encouraged me and told me not to discourage me, because she could bring me closer to Cáritas. ANDShe heard my case and that’s where it all started. She gave me a light. For me it has been like an outstretched hand when you are already falling. At that moment, which is a bit critical, they tell you that yes, don’t give up, that they have help for you and that you can do it. That’s how I felt. And so far they are always looking out for me, my case and many more cases.”

Now it feels very strong. “I know that we are going to be able to contribute a lot to this country with our strength, with our ideas, with our honesty and with our gratitude to those who have opened the doors for us and, above all, to Cáritas, which is a helping hand for us”, concludes Ana Sofia.
