The assassination of famous Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop continues to impact athletic-related competitions in Kenya. As proof, the Gusii racing series has been suspended until further notice.
The move is made in honor of running star Agnes Jebet Tirop, who was recently murdered. The competition was in its third phase. The Kenyan athlete competed in the women’s 5,000m playoffs during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games at the Tokyo Olympic Stadium on July 30, 2021.
In a statement, Athletics Kenya (AK) President Jackson Tuwei announced the suspension of all competitions on the track and field calendar in honor of Tirop. An announcement that forced the organizers of the five-part Nyamira Great Run series to reschedule the remaining events.
“It’s really sad that a promising athlete can die under unclear circumstances. We will communicate the new dates of the remaining events, ”said AK Nyanza South President Peter Angwenyi.
