Against the heat – drinking water for free: campaign in shops and restaurants in Lower Austria

The sun is beating down, sweat is dripping and thirst is great. The high temperatures are causing problems for many, especially in the Lower Austrian cities. The “I don’t care if you’re thirsty” campaign is now intended to remedy the situation: If the water bottle is empty, you can have it refilled free of charge in marked shops or restaurants in Lower Austria. As part of the campaign, the Green Economy and the Greens of Lower Austria are issuing stickers for the displays that draw the attention of passers-by to the offer.

August Lechner, regional spokesman for the Lower Austrian Green Economy, emphasizes the low-threshold solidarity of the campaign: “The campaign is a fine service for pedestrians, a contribution to waste avoidance and a sales opportunity for shop owners at the same time. Once the thirsty people are in the shop, they look around,” says Lechner.

Because bottles are reused, the campaign also sets an example for environmental protection. “It is often the simple and uncomplicated ideas that can be implemented quickly and effectively. Thanks to the campaign of the green economy, entrepreneurs can make a direct contribution to environmental protection and help to cool down on hot summer days,” says business spokesman and member of the Lower Austrian Greens, Georg Ecker.

The campaign started today, Thursday, July 13th. The Famos delicatessen shop in the center of St. Pölten received the first sticker in Lower Austria. When the sticker was sent out in August, around 1,000 other entrepreneurs were invited by post to take part in the campaign. In addition, officials will make rounds and hand out the stickers.
