After years of chaos, EU ambassador returns to Libya

The European Union provides assistance to Libya’s new interim government. For example, an EU ambassador will be stationed in the country after a long absence at the end of this month, EU President Charles Michel announced today during a visit to the Libyan capital Tripoli.

“We will work with and support the new government,” Michel said after a meeting with interim Prime Minister Dbeibah and Foreign Minister Mangoush. “The economic recovery, elections and the fight against illegal immigration are things in which the EU can help.”

He also promised that the EU will donate 50,000 doses of corona vaccines to Libya. These are in addition to the 100,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik vaccine that arrived in the country today.

Last month Parliament approved Dbeibah’s temporary government of national unity. It faces the task of leading Libya to new parliamentary elections at the end of this year and focuses on reconciling rival parties.

War and lawlessness

After the uprising against dictator Muammar Gaddafi and his death in 2011, Libya went to war. As early as October, the warring parties agreed on an armistice and it holds up reasonably well. Yet there are still many foreign mercenaries in the country.
