The death toll in Italy started to rise again Monday, with 636 additional deaths in 24 hours, after two consecutive days of decline, announced the Civil Protection.

Italy, the country hardest hit by the Covid-19 epidemic with a total of 16,523 deaths in more than 132,000 cases, had started to expect a lull after recording significant drops on Saturday and Sunday compared to 766 deaths from Friday.

On Sunday, the country announced an additional 525 deaths. In total since the outbreak of the epidemic in the Peninsula on February 21, Italy has recorded 16,523 deaths, the heaviest official death toll in the world.

The number of confirmed cases increased in 24 hours from 3,599, the lowest daily count since March 17, to reach a total of 132,547 cases.

The country has 3,898 people in intensive care, 79 less than on Sunday. This number has now been decreasing for three consecutive days.
