Hundreds of thousands of Swiss have been working from home for weeks. What initially caused many abdominal pains has become normal. With every easing step, one wonders if all the commuters are going to work again. Zerrin Azeri from recruitment agency Robert Half believes that home office will prevail even after the lockdown.
–
The numbers are impressive: at the height of the crisis, almost half of Swiss employees worked from home. Before Corona, only ten percent had done that. The home office has now established itself, she believes. “Every second person wants to work from home even after the crisis,” she says. Not only the employees had positive experiences, also the superiors.

«We have observed that employees quickly get used to the new situation and appreciate the advantages. For example, the flexibility in terms of time or the absence of a commute to work, »says the expert. Anyone who has otherwise worked in open-plan offices now knows how to appreciate the quiet at home and can concentrate better. But: “This requires a certain degree of self-discipline and effective time management.”

Talk to colleagues anyway
It is crucial that you take a break from time to time, take a walk. Take a break too. “What often happens to colleagues on their own at the coffee machine in the office is a thing of the past in their home office,” she says. If possible, a separate room or area should be set up as an office that blocks out all distractions. “This is how you separate professional and private, both spatially and mentally,” says Zerrin Azeri.

But isn’t there a risk of being lonely in the week-long home office? Azeri waves it off. «Communication has become much more important, on a business as well as on an interpersonal level. Employees should speak to their line manager and other colleagues on a regular basis and exchange ideas about their projects. »

Bosses also have to ask
Conversations with questions about personal well-being must also take place. Because: “These discussions promote trust and prevent uncertainty in the times of Corona,” she says. Very important: Even superiors should regularly inquire how their employees are doing.
–
The central question remains: Will the topic of home office change permanently? Will we work more frequently at the kitchen table at home in the future? «Many companies and professionals have had positive experiences with it in recent weeks. Even if most of the employees are likely to return to work in the next few weeks, working from home after the crisis will be more firmly anchored in everyday work than ever before, »the expert believes.
