After the BER opening: Will there soon be nothing going on at Dresden Airport?

Dresden’s tranquil airport is being grappled with after the opening of the capital city BER.

Dresden – Yes, the time after Corona will come. And yes, people will probably be back in that vacation to fly. The only question is where to and from which airport. Because with the new one Berlin airport suddenly completely new possibilities arise. And Dresden’s contemplative starting point is therefore properly caught in the international pincer.

Many had no longer believed in it, but operations at BER in the south of Berlin are running. It takes less than two hours by car from Dresden, and Prague Airport is just as quick to reach.

With major international destinations, some of which are quite cheap. So there are no easy times ahead for Dresden. Most recently, the connections to Barcelona and St. Petersburg were canceled.

In Leipzig, too, Lufthansa has just stopped domestic flight operations in Germany.

It is true that the Free State sees “no competition” in BER when asked and refers to the very good transport links from Dresden and Leipzig.

But behind the scenes, the state as the main owner (77.29 percent) is already thinking about how to keep Dresden in the long term.

The airport holding company itself said politely: “We are delighted with the Berliners and Brandenburgers that BER is now finished. As before, people from our catchment area will sometimes fly from Berlin. The other way round, Berliners and Brandenburgers will continue to fly from Leipzig and Dresden. ”

When it comes to freight traffic, Leipzig is number 1 in the east anyway …

The future will show how Dresden can position itself between the offers from Prague and Berlin.

The fact is already now: The airports can not only be reached via the motorway (keyword long-distance bus).

A railway spokesman: “From Dresden there are seven free transfers every two hours IC connections per day and direction with a travel time of 1.38 hours. “
