After Recovering from Covid-19, Someone Can Experience Hearing Loss

JawaPos.com – Patients who survived Covid-19 may experience hearing loss. This condition appears as a complication that some people complain about after the virus has disappeared from the body.

Doctors began investigating this finding since it was reported at the end of July. A team from the University of Manchester surveyed 121 people who survived the Corona virus. The survey targeted patients who had recovered for eight weeks.

In severe incidents, some patients may experience what is called post-covid syndrome. As many as 16 people (13.2 percent) of the 121 patients surveyed complained that their hearing was worse.

And 8 of them have decreased function in the senses. And 8 others suffer from tinnitus, which is characterized by hearing ringing, hissing, or buzzing without an external source.

Study author Professor Kevin Munro said other diseases could also cause complications later in life. And the Corona virus can irritate nerves.

“We already know that viruses such as measles, mumps and meningitis can cause hearing loss and the Corona virus can damage nerves that carry information to and from the brain,” he explained. Mothership, Wednesday (5/8).

Thus, it is possible that Covid-19 causes problems in parts of the auditory system, including the middle ear or cochlea. Patients complain of not being able to hear well in a noisy place, known as hearing neuropathy.

Hearing neuropathy is a hearing loss in which the cochlea functions, but transmission along the auditory nerve to the brain is disrupted. The neurological condition Guillain-Barre syndrome (GBS) is also associated with auditory neuropathy.

GBS has occurred in several patients Coronavirus. In severe cases, GBS makes it difficult for patients to swallow, walk, or even breathe. Although not general, but this situation can be experienced by several people.
