Although it is too early to draw definite conclusions, a new expedition points to a natural explanation for the damage to the wreck after Estonia.
The mud where the wreck lies hides bedrock whose appearance matches the previously unknown hole in the hull that was revealed in a documentary last year. Then theories were raised that the hole was caused by a submarine or an explosion.
– It could be the blow to the rock that caused the hole, says Jonas Bäckstrand, chairman of the Swedish Accident Investigation Board’s new investigation.
