It was crooked as a hoop. While Americans had been able to travel undisturbed to Europe for months, Piet Steens was not allowed to enter the United States. Not even to visit his only son. The dispensation that he appealed to as a parent took no less than four months. “You can swear and rant, but that’s no use,” says Steens (80) at home in Berkel-Enschot. “You shouldn’t think that something serious had happened, would you? Then we might have been too late. Who knows how many families that has happened to.”
