Argentinian striker Gonzalo Higuain is taking his final steps as a professional in football, having announced on Monday that he will retire at the end of the current season with Inter Miami.
The 34-year-old said with great emotion during a press conference: “The day has come to say goodbye to football, which has given me so much. It was a privilege for me to practice this profession, it is sweet and bitter ”.
With Inter Miami in seventh place in the eastern American League “MLS” region, Higuain has only two games in the regular season, hoping to take him and his team to the playoffs.
Higuain joined Inter Miami, owned by former English star David Beckham, in the summer of 2020 from Italian Juventus, who defended his colors for nine seasons.
Higuain joined Juventus in 2016 for € 90m from Napoli, but after two modest seasons with the team he moved to Milan on loan for the 2018-2019 season, and then to Chelsea, before returning to Turin in the summer of 2019.
Higuain, who played three World Cup finals and scored 31 goals in 75 international matches, left the Torino giants after helping them win the Serie A title three times.
Higuain arrived in Europe in 2006 when he joined Real Madrid from River Plate, on his way to winning the La Liga title three times, the Cup once and the Super Cup two, before leaving in 2013 to Napoli, which broke the record of number of league goals in a season (36 in 35 games for the 2015-2016 season), before Lazio top scorer Ciro Immobile (2019-2020 season) matched him later.
During his three years in the American League, Higuain scored 27 goals in 67 games without winning any titles.
