Advice: two new bridges and ferries over the Amsterdam IJ

Two new bridges have to be built across the Amsterdam IJ, advises a committee set up by the municipality and the national government. More places are being sought to cross the IJ to improve the connection between Amsterdam North and the rest of the city. The advisory committee has been asked to find out where and how best to make a crossing for pedestrians and cyclists, AT5 writes.

The new bridges must be located where the bicycle inner ring to be constructed crosses the IJ. Trams and buses must also be able to cross the bridges.

It is also advisable to also realize two new ferry connections, as well as a pedestrian tunnel from the north bank of the IJ to Central Station. The current ferry connections would then no longer be necessary.

Amsterdam Alderman Van Doorninck of Spatial Development expects to be able to make agreements in the autumn about a definitive design plan for the IJ. These must then be assessed by the municipal administration.
