The little town of Lucerne – embedded in an impressive mountain panorama – is the gateway to Central Switzerland, on Lake Lucerne. Lucerne is the ideal starting point for many excursions to the highlights of Central Switzerland. THE OLD TOWN

KKL – Culture and Congress Center Lucerne
The Lucerne Culture and Convention Center (KKL Luzern) is the work of the Parisian architect Jean Nouvel. The concert hall with 1900 seats is famous for its phenomenal acoustics. The Lucerne Hall, the auditorium in the congress center and the Lucerne Art Museum are also part of this building. The view from two roof terraces of the lake and the old town is impressive.

THE LION MONUMENT
One of the most famous monuments in the world is “The Dying Lion of Lucerne”. It was carved into the naturally grown rock in memory of the heroic death of the Swiss who died in 1792 in the Tuileries. The American writer Mark Twain made “the dying lion of Lucerne” the saddest and most moving piece of stone in the world.
DIE KAPELLBRÜCKE
In the first half of the 14th century the Chapel Bridge was built as part of the city fortifications. It takes its name from the neighboring St. Peters Chapel. The panels inserted in the 17th century show scenes from Swiss and city history and the biographies of the city patrons St. Leodegar and Mauritus.
On August 18, 1993, a large part of the Chapel Bridge, Lucerne’s landmark, fell victim to a fire. Only the two bridgeheads and the water tower could be saved. The missing part of the bridge was reconstructed within eight months, so that on April 14, 1994 the “new” Chapel Bridge could be reopened. This concludes the most recent chapter in the varied history of this world-famous building.
THE WATER TOWER
The Lucerne water tower, a strong boss, is nicely balanced in shape. Its characteristic is not only the old stork’s nest on the top of the tower, which has not been occupied for a hundred years, but also the design. The water tower is constructed as an octagon, the shape that Emperor Friedrich II particularly loved and who created the most beautiful of his buildings in an octagon. The water tower measures 34.5 m from the ground to the roof. It is even a little thicker than it is tall; because whether you want to believe it or not: the circumference is 38 meters.
In the first half of the 14th century, the water tower was probably built on dry ground. In its long history, the massive structure served various purposes. The water tower was first a defense and watchtower, later it was used as an archive, treasure and armory. The lowest room with its 4 1/2 meter thick walls was used as a dungeon. It was very dark inside the water tower. The poor sinners who got in there had to be let down through a hole while sitting on a gag. The torture chamber was not missing, as it had also been in many other towers.
Today the living room of the Lucerne Artillery Association is on the middle floor. An alpine sailing colony has been nesting in the attic for many decades. When the birds return from their winter quarters in Equatorial Africa in April, they are Lucerne’s harbingers of spring. Welcome to Lucerne.
MUSEGG CITY WALL
The Musegg city wall from 1370 with its nine towers, enthroning Lucerne, is part of the historic city fortifications. Most of them are accessible today, an impressive and unforgettable experience with a view of Lucerne, the lake and the mountains.
