Addressing the Shortage of Trained Personnel in the Health Sector: Opportunities and Support Programs in New York

The lack of trained personnel in the health area keeps hundreds of vacancies open.

In order to meet this demand, the government has relaxed some requirements for hiring personnel through the program. HELP.

Additionally, institutions like NYU Langone offer free training so interested people can become community health workers.

These types of employees, especially bilingual, are a key element in health institutions, as they help patients who do not speak English to better understand their symptoms and treatments.

They are also a link for patients to the resources that are available to them and that they do not know how to access.

NYU Langone’s Beyond Bridges program offers training that includes core concepts such as biomedical ethics, clinical research foundations, scientific concepts, and topics such as diversity and inclusion.

This training can help them become certified to apply for jobs that offer salaries between $40,000 and $100,000 a year.

Jobs in the health area in New York

To help agencies fill these critical positions, the Department of Civil Service will allow state agencies to hire qualified, permanent employees without appropriate exams.

The Emergency Limited Placement Hiring Program (HELP) temporarily eliminates the civil service exam requirement for more than 100 direct care, health and safety titles for thousands of positions.

State agencies will hire new employees under the HELP Program starting last April through March 31, 2024.

They offer free exams for the civil service

Governor Kathy Hochul announced that civil service exam application fees are now waived for all New York State civil service exams, effective July 1, 2023 through December 2025.
