Actor Sidney Poitier (94) dies, first black actor to win Oscar for best male lead

Shortly after World War II, Poitier began acting career on Broadway, before plunging into the film world from the 1950s. In 1950 he got his first lead role in “No way out”, as a doctor who has to treat a racist. In 1955 he broke through to the public eye with his role as a rebellious student in “The Blackboard Jungle”.

In 1958 he was nominated for an Oscar for the first time, for his role in “The Defiant Ones”. It is not long before Poitier actually wins a statue. In 1964 he makes history: he becomes the first black actor ever (and the first man from the Bahamas) to win the Oscar for best male lead, in “Lilies of the Field”, a humorous film in which a group of sisters believe that Poitier has come to them. has been sent by God to build a new chapel. Poitier keeps it in his acting career to one Oscar and two nominations.
