Activists Stage Protest at Handel’s Messiah Performance in Santa Cecilia, Rome

Some Last Generation activists staged a protest tonight in Santa Cecilia during the performance of Handel’s Messiah directed by John Nelson. While one of them filmed the scene, three young people came onto the stage and sat next to the conductor’s podium and the singers. The execution continued while the room staff intervened to remove them despite their passive resistance. The protesters wore T-shirts with different slogans: ‘Notes of the catastrophe”, ”The show cannot go on”, ”Repair fund now”.

The raid on the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome began at the time of Allelujah. Three activists took to the stage to raise “a cry” of alarm: “This is not a Christmas of joy”, humanity “has opened the gates of hell as denounced by the UN Secretary General”, they said as they sat down at the feet of John Nelson, conductor.

Chained with cable ties to the conductor’s support, the activists stood there next to the choristers who continued to sing. The musicians continued to play until the end of the act.

The audience then booed the activists. But then someone also applauded. There was also a moment when one of the activists, while being taken away, stopped in front of the orchestra doors on the stage and started crying, so a lady from the audience approached her to comfort her.
