Activision Plans New Call of Duty Games Until 2027: Modern Warfare 3 and More!

It looks like Activision wants to continue the success of Call of Duty for a while longer. The publisher has already planned new parts for the series until 2027. Yup, including Modern Warfare 3, we’ll get at least 5 more games. Although we have no idea what era we are heading into.

Activision president Rob Kostich revealed the news during an interview with GamesBeat. The man was talking about the past of Call of Duty. But also about the future direction of the series.

Call of Duty has visited many historical conflicts over the past 20 years. The series started as a shooter in the Second World War, but only really broke through through the Modern Warfare sub-series. This was followed by Black Ops, another huge success. With Advanced Warfare and Infinite Warfare, the game moved into the future. Although those parts were significantly less successful.

Kostich indicates that Activision has learned lessons from every Call of Duty game. With the alternation between past and future, ‘you eventually begin the sweet spot and it becomes clear what resonates with the community’.

The man admits that ‘Activision is constantly in a planning phase and works in the long term’. At the moment there are ‘Call of Duty games planned until 2027, which are also being worked on’.

Yet Kostich believes that balance is important. Activision wants to offer ‘immersive, but also varied experiences, where players feel like they are experiencing a new kind of fun. The weapons in the games are very important and are often even related to the story.

Of course, the time period presents a challenge in terms of weapons. The Second World War ‘offers much less flexibility if you want a realistic basis’. This is different for the modern era, as futuristic elements can be plausible in a contemporary setting. And thus enable more flexibility.’

Finally, Kostich admits that Black Ops is a completely separate chapter in that regard. According to the Activision president, ‘Black Ops is super interesting because the series offers access to top secret weapons and experiments’. For that reason, ‘a lot of creativity is possible in the Black Ops games and that is fun for the teams to work with’.

There is no doubt that Activision still has real plans for Call of Duty. Don’t expect another Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4. Since the upcoming Modern Warfare 3 is actually an extension of its predecessor. And given Kostich’s enthusiasm for the Black Ops sub-series, we bet that a sequel with that name is also on the way. What do you think?
