Defense Ministry has activated military reserve doctors ready to intervene in health matters and has instructed the military pharmacy to increase the development of hydro-alcoholic disinfectant solutions as well as other generic medications that may be necessary.
Defense has launched the Military Emergency Unit (UME) since this Sunday which will start from this same Sunday to carry out previous examinations, actions aimed at identifying needs, in seven cities where there may be a higher risk of the virus spreading, such as Madrid, Valencia, Seville, and Zaragoza.
The UME also it will be activated in cities where it has deployed military contingents such as León, Las Palmas and Santa Cruz de Tenerife especially in cities where there may be an increased risk of the virus spreading
Management meeting
Defense Minister Margarita Robles, this morning chaired the coordination meeting to discuss the measures to be implemented by the Armed Forces on the occasion of COVID-19. A meeting attended by the Secretary of State, Ángel Olivares; the Chief of Defense Staff (JEMAD), Miguel Ángel Villarroya; the undersecretary of Defense, Alejo de la Torre; the Secretary General of Defense Policy, Admiral Juan Francisco Núñez; the commander of the Operations Command (MOPS), Lieutenant General Fernando López Del Pozo; the Head of the Military Emergency Unit (UME), Luis Martínez Meijide, the directors of Cabinets and the director of Communication.
The Ministry has issued an instruction that will develop Royal Decree 463/2020, of March 14, declaring a state of alarm for the management of the health crisis situation caused by COVID-19, within the scope of the Ministry of Defense.
Operations
At this meeting it has been agreed activate a single command that will be the Chief of Defense Staff (JEMAD). The JEMAD, through the Operations Command, will integrate the operational, health, logistics and infrastructure capacities belonging to the UME, the General Health Inspection (IGESAN) and the operational structure of the Armies and the Navy, which will make them available to the competent authorities.
UME soldiers are deployed in Madrid.
