The Green Buffer action committee of Mechelen-South is moving up a gear in its opposition to the plans for a Plopsaqua location. The members have started an online petition that has already yielded about 700 signatures in one day.

“It would be great if we could get a thousand of them against the city council on Monday evening, but it shouldn’t stop there,” says Jan De Coster, spokesman for the Green Buffer action committee of Mechelen-South. A debate and various questions from council members are already on the agenda at the municipal council. Plopsa Group wants to apply for an environmental permit this year for the construction of a water amusement park and an urban swimming pool at Technopolis in Mechelen.

The fact that the multinational is not prepared to wait for a new regional spatial implementation plan is not well received by the action committee. “It has become a typical response from Plopsa and from the city council to dismiss the protests surrounding the project as the actions of individuals. The indignation about the plans can be found all over Mechelen. You will also notice this in the number of followers on our social media, ”says De Coster.

To send another clear signal, Groene Buffer started a petition on Saturday afternoon. “We ask to give the Zennebeemdenbos a fair chance with a thorough research on the GRUP (Regional Spatial Implementation Plan, ed.) and not pushing the project through quickly-quickly as long as the legal framework is still favorable. In our opinion, alternative solutions for the Geerdegemvaart swimming pool have not been sufficiently researched, ”explains Jan De Coster.
