A few dozen people demonstrated this morning in Zuidoost against the possible arrival of an erotic center. The Amsterdam council wants such a center to relieve the burden on the Red Light District, which suffers from nuisance. It has not yet been determined where the erotic center, where about a hundred sex workers will have to provide their services. Eight preferred locations have now been established, including one in Southeast.

The demonstration was organized by local resident Kwame Agyeman, who is also on the list for the Christian Union. “When I heard that there might be an erotic center here, I thought: no, that’s not what Zuidoost needs,” says Kwame. “I grew up here, I know what the challenges are here, the social problems that prevail here. An erotic center is not going to solve those problems.”

It is not yet known when the final location will be determined. The council does want to reduce the number of preferred locations from eight to two or three before the summer. Party leader of the ChristenUnie Gerjan van den Heuvel does not think the demonstration is premature. “It is precisely now that you have to make noise because now there is still something to decide,” said Gerjan. “Here in Southeast, a lot of people have no idea that this could happen, so it is important to let us know now.”

Diana Sardjoe, who has been committed to the neighborhood for years with the ‘The mother is the key’ foundation, also finds it incomprehensible that Zuidoost is being considered as a location. “We are not the drain of Amsterdam”, says Sardjoe. “Southeast is always the place that gets the problems thrown at it. We already have enough hassle. A lot of things are also going well. Then invest in that and don’t keep bringing this place down.”
