ACLU denounces acts of censorship in Puerto Rico

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) denounced yesterday as dangerous what they point to as a pattern of censorship of public expressions by various authorities. The complaint refers to the censorship in social networks of communications related to the management of the emergency due to the seismic movements and failures in the distribution of aid, as well as the censorship of the Macabeo Orchestra at the San Sebastián Street Festivities.

“Apparently, now we don’t just have to worry about devastating hurricanes and earthquakes, meteorites, and the possibility of a tsunami; but, if we dare to denounce our dislikes and betray politicians for their bad executions, we have to worry about a tsunami of censorship of expression that gags us at all levels of government. The expression, in all its aspects, is a right covered by the Constitution of Puerto Rico, and the First Amendment of the United States Constitution; In addition, it is a precious right in the field of human rights. Giving up the bad executions of our political representatives is one of the few ways available to the people to demand accountability and transparency in government, ”said the ACLU in a statement signed by its executive director William Ramírez. The communication points to censures in social networks of entities that denounce the mismanagement of aid, “probably at the request of a government agent.”

Reference is also made to the incident that culminated in the cancellation of the Macabeo Orchestra’s presentation at the San Sebastián Street Festivities. “The Macabeo Group denounces that last night, at the San Sebastián Street Festivities, their musical presentation was canceled, and that they were escorted to a bus leaving San Juan, due to a message on the shirt of one of the musicians. What, if confirmed, constitutes censorship by political expression, ”said the statement.

“Covering expressions of the people against the bad executions of the government, or violations of fundamental rights, undermines the right of a people that is already seriously hurt by the atmospheric phenomena of recent years, and that due to the incessant corruption has stopped trusting its state and municipal governments. To strengthen any effort by the citizens to inform the people is not only a violation of a fundamental fundamental right in our constitutional order, but could also constitute a mortal blow to what we have left of democracy. It is now suggested that the intervention of people in the late Ponceño warehouse could be cause to charge for escalation; however, to proceed with these accusations the government will have greater concern, since many of the supplies found there bear the stamp of federal agencies. We believe he speaks for himself, ”concludes Ramírez in the press release.
