Accusations, Scandals, and No Confidence: The LUKoil Dispute Unfolds

A new name was involved in the saga of the LUKoil dispute, which was swirling between GERB-SDS, DPS and PP-DB. The leader of the DPS parliamentary group, Delyan Peevski, accused the right-wing union of “having a personal interest in LUKoil”. And he added that an arms dealer mediated a meeting between Prime Minister Nikolay Denkov, the head of the cabinet and representatives of the refinery. “His last name is Christov,” Peevski declared, but without specifying who this person is. And he warned that “the LUKoil affair will end” and that “there will certainly be arrests”. Peevski advised the journalists to check “how the commissions are going”, without it being clear exactly how this could be done.

THE VOTE OF NO CONFIDENCE AND THE DEROGATION OF “LUKOIL”

For the second day now, the attempts of the deputies to vote a vote of no confidence in the “Denkov-Gabriel” cabinet have failed. Today, this turned out to be impossible, as GERB-SDS, DPS, “Vazrazhdane” and ITN refused to register in order to gather a quorum. Later, on the sidelines of the parliament, Delyan Peevski commented that “he would not support a government that works against Euro-Atlanticism”. And he directly threatened that if PP-DB continue to work with “Vazrazhdane” and BSP, he will not support them.

In fact, the reluctance of the DPS and GERB-SDS to register yesterday and today, as well as the accusations that the PP-DB are acting together with the nationalists and the Social Deputies, is tied precisely to the scandal that took shape around the LUKoil derogation. After the failure of yesterday’s attempt to vote for the resignation of the government, Delyan Peevski succinctly announced that this was the “night of signs”. He referred to the meeting of the Security Council in the Council of Ministers, which representatives of GERB-SDS and DPS left indignantly after not agreed with their colleagues from the PP-DB when the derogation of “LUKoil Neftohim” should expire. Then in the plenary hall, the Gerbers and the Movement hit a snag with the immediate removal of the derogation. “Against” was declared by “Vazrazhdane” ‘ and BSP, and PP-DB voted “abstain”.

Next Wednesday, MPs will make another attempt to vote no confidence in the government. This practically means that the parliament falls into a situation of voting a vote of no confidence for three days.

Today, on the sidelines of the parliament, GERB-SDS leader Boyko Borisov said that the job of his people is not to ensure a quorum. And he added that he is not responsible for the decision of the other parties not to register for the meeting. He hinted, however, that when it was necessary, the Gerberas were united with the DPS. “We and the DPS acted unitedly when the Republic of Macedonia had to be accepted, when armored personnel carriers and S-300 missiles had to be given to Ukraine, when the nuclear fuel for the Kozloduy NPP had to be changed,” Borisov recalled.
