A British study has now found that high estrogen levels could have a protective effect against Covid-19.
In recent months, it has become increasingly clear that women are less likely to contract the new corona virus than men. Their courses are also milder and they die much less often from the disease. Scientists at King’s College London now have new ones research results published in which they claim to have found an explanation for this phenomenon.
Birth control pills may have protective effects against the corona virus
In May and June, King’s College London carried out an examination of more than half a million women to check whether estrogen levels had an impact on the corona virus. It was previously known that the sex hormone interacts with the immune system in different ways. For example, it should influence how many immune cells are produced and how they react to infections.
The researchers found that pre-menopausal women with higher estrogen levels had less severe COVID-19 courses than women of the same age who had already gone through the menopause. When they compared a group of younger women who took the pill with a group who did not take the pill, they also found that there were less severe cases of Covid among women taking the pill. “This suggests that hormones in the pill could offer some protection against Covid-19. Further research is certainly needed to expand our knowledge, “said Dr. Karla Lee, author of the study.
This is why not only men are more affected by infections, but also women in the age group from 45 to 50. After the menopause, the estrogen level drops significantly.
Enjoy results with caution
Even if the results are very gratifying, we must also be aware that the pill is also no guarantee that the virus will not get. There is still a lot of research to be done to further investigate the impact of estrogen on the virus. The London study first proved that there is a link between estrogen levels and Covid-19. What exactly this looks like now has to be scientifically examined.
