The changes affect 81,333 teachers and 13,297 direct assistants in the school district institutions. As of July 1, 2023, 52,413 people (55 percent) in school district institutions will have their salaries increased, the announcement states.
The average monthly gross earnings of full-time employees in education in 2020 was HUF 362,838, which rose to HUF 401,837 in 2021 and HUF 446,243 in 2022.
Thanks to the 10 percent salary increases implemented from January 1, 2023 and the additional salary increases to be implemented retroactively from July 1, 2023, the average salary for teachers in 2023 will be around HUF 500,000 gross, and from January 1, 2024, it will increase by an additional 10 percent on average.
The wage increases are covered by the national budget, as Hungary has not yet received the EU funds it is entitled to.
The government will make the cover available to the maintainers of all public education institutions: the funding requirement for salary increases retroactive to July 1, 2023, in November 2023, and an additional 10 percent of wages provided from the national budget from January 1, 2024, at the beginning of 2024.
