The number of cases detected during these five days indicates the general trend, which was also observed in the previous week – the number of cases remains low.

“We can still say that Latvia is one of the safest countries not only in the European Union, but also in the world,” said the epidemiologist.

Of the cases registered this week, four clearly indicated that they were infected abroad, while in two cases the epidemiological link indicated contact with people who were already infected with Covid-19 and also infected abroad. In contrast, three patients became infected after contacting someone who was abroad within two weeks of entering the country.

Another patient became infected through contact with the patient – in this case, according to Perevoshchikov, the epidemiological link has been known for a long time.

However, in three cases involving foci of infection found in two families, the link between the infection has not yet been established, the epidemiologist found. At present, as Perevoschikov noted, there are not many such cases and their frequency does not increase over time.

Meanwhile, for two weeks now, the incidence of Covid-19 in European countries has been rising, reaching 10 to 30% increase. Statistically, two out of three countries show an increase, and these increases have been observed in countries with a large population, explained the SPKC expert.

Observing these increases, Perevoshchikov emphasizes the importance of self-isolation and social distancing, adding that so far there have been cases of people becoming infected in European countries, where initially the incidence was low, but later increased.

The SPKC expert also found that there were cases of infected persons who returned from countries where self-isolation had to be observed, but did not comply with this requirement.

Therefore, as Perevoshchikov pointed out, it is important to think about and consider the risks when planning trips even to countries with low morbidity rates but increasing morbidity.

It has already been reported that another Covid-19 patient who died of the new coronavirus from a relative who visited abroad died in Latvia last day, according to the information provided by the SPKC. The deceased was in the age group of 90 to 95 years.

As a result, a total of 32 people with Covid-19 died in Latvia.

Last day, 1473 Covid-19 tests were performed in the country and three new cases were registered. In one case, Covid-19 was discovered after entering a country with a morbidity rate above 25, one patient returned from a country with a morbidity rate below 16, and one patient had contacted a person from a country where the incidence rate was below 16.

Covid-19 infections detected last day were registered in Jūrmala, as well as in Gulbene and Ādaži counties. Patients are in the age groups of ten to 19 years, 40 to 49 years and 50 to 59 years.

By now, all those infected in Ādaži municipality have recovered. In turn, Jūrmala is among the municipalities where the number of infected does not exceed five.

A total of 11 cases of the disease have been diagnosed in Gulbene municipality so far. In this municipality, the incidence of Covid-19 was first detected on July 22. Later, Normunds Audzišs (ZZS), the chairman of Gulbene County Council, issued an order stating that from July 29 to August 12, 56 municipal institutions were closed for face-to-face visits in the municipality due to Covid-19, except for kindergarten on duty groups.
