Abandoned Spas, Hospitals, and Camps: Exploring Bohemia, Moravia, and Silesia – Tales of Abandoned Buildings Series

In the seventh part, we will focus on abandoned spas, hospitals and camps.

Prague

The complex for war invalids in Prague’s Karlín was built between 1731 and 1737 according to the project of Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer. Invalids were recuperating here until 1935. Then, the uncompleted area was used as an archive or offices. It was destroyed in 2002 during floods. It has been under management since 2018 National Monument Institute and wakes up to life.

Usti Region

During the First Republic, it was an exhibition medical facility. Jetřichovick sanatorium in the heart Czech Switzerland National Park it is also one of the symbols of the village thanks to this. But in recent years it has deteriorated. The new owner is planning to convert it into a hotel, everything was slowed down by last year’s fire.

Liberec region

The building of the former Jablonec Children’s Hospital in the street Peter Bezruč it has been empty for a quarter of a century. It was cleared in 1998. Since then, there has been nothing in the city-owned building. The silence in the long corridors and mostly empty rooms is broken from time to time by the policemen’s tactical exercises.

Hradec Kralove region

Vojt’s method made the Railway famous throughout Europe. After the disappearance of the children’s spa in Jičínsk, the previously beautiful buildings fell into disrepair for many years. Thanks to the determination of enthusiasts, life is gradually returning to the area. All that remains is the building of the spa school, which is owned by the city and unfortunately is still unused.

Pardubice region

The walls smell of disinfection, the rooms are cleared and the corridors are dirty. Villa Klára in Litomyšl has been empty for years and is waiting for its new story. For the second time, the city is offering a historic building from the end of the 19th century, which was last used as a hospital for sale. However, interested parties are not flocking.

South Bohemian region

The former lung hospital in Hrudkov, which has not been used for almost twenty years, has great potential for the future. It stands in an attractive location near Lipno in the very south of Bohemia and is close to Austrian lakes or slopes.

Pilsen Region

Surroundings of the picturesque town Rabštejna nad Střela offers an abundance of romantic places inviting to visit. However, one of them stands out, the Kozičkův mill. Even the participants of the children’s camp at the nearby Železné Hamr are well aware of his murderous reputation. He regularly goes on trips around it. However, they do not embark on the path of courage to him.

Karlovy Vary Region

Forest mill in Mariánské Lázně used to be a popular destination for walks. The owners expanded the original mill operation to a restaurant, cafe, dance hall and accommodation. The golden times of prosperity ended at the beginning of the 1990s. Today, however, better times dawned on Lesní mlýn.

Highlands

The history of the hospital on Buchtova kopca near Daňkovice in the Žďársk region served as a children’s pulmonary hospital. For II. world war however, it was used by the Hitler Youth. After its end, the sanatorium started treating adults again, this time. The glory days are in the past and the building has been decaying for over ten years.

South-Moravian region

Like something out of a disaster movie. Such a view is revealed among the lush vegetation to a random pedestrian when he climbs up to the grounds of the former sanatorium near Bílovice nad Svitavou. Shattered windows, leaky roof, sprayed walls. The clinic closed in 2011 and South-Moravian region thus he lost a hundred beds for long-term patients.

Moravian-Silesian Region

In its heyday, the local springs were used to treat anemia, while the carbonic baths helped with rheumatism and heart diseases. At the beginning of the 20th century, the cream of the crop used to come here for recreation. They are today John’s Baths in an impoverished state. But now it is about to be renovated in a big way. It should begin by making two sources available.

Olomouc region

The roof is in danger of collapsing, the facade is damaged, the interiors are almost empty. This is what Villa Primavesi looked like in the 1990s, a former art nouveau gem and home to medical offices in the center Olomouc. After years of repairs, the building managed to return to its former beauty, which can be admired by local residents and tourists.
