28 Aug 2021 – 8:07 p. m.

The women would have been abandoned in the middle of nowhere by a coyote with whom they sought to cross the border irregularly.

The Consulate of Colombia in Los Angeles informed the Foreign Ministry that two Colombians died in the Arizona desert of exhaustion, while seeking to enter the United States.

The deceased compatriots are Claudia Marcela Peña and her eleven-year-old daughter. They were found by the Yuma County border patrol in Arizona, specifically in the Levee Road and County area, in the desert area of the reservation, without signs of violence, according to the forensic doctor.

The Colombians were also traveling with a two-year-old boy who was rescued by the authorities. The latter also suffered extreme exhaustion from the crossing in the desert, one of the largest in the world.

“The authorities informed that he will be in the custody of a center for minors in California until it is defined with whom he would remain in the United States or if he returns to Colombia,” said the Colombian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Foreign Ministry has already contacted the families of the fatalities to provide advice on the process of repatriation of the bodies or ashes of the deceased.

Yeni Acevedo, Claudia Marcela Peña’s cousin, told Noticias Caracol that the woman left on August 21 for Mexico, where she spent two days. On Tuesday morning, he traveled to Tijuana by plane and then by land until he met a supposed coyote, as those who help migrants cross the border are known. The coyote, after the family did not withstand the high temperatures of the desert, would have abandoned the women in the middle of nowhere.

Tijuana is often the meeting point for thousands of migrants seeking to cross the southern border of the United States. Although most fall into the hands of the US authorities, there are those who manage to circumvent security. However, they face very adverse weather conditions, so many die on the way.
