In response to the information received, patrol police officers from the State Police arrived at the scene. Following the instructions of eyewitnesses, police officers noticed and detained a possible guilty woman near the scene, who was taken to the Riga Latgale station of the State Police. It should be mentioned that the police obtained a video from eyewitnesses, which shows that the bird’s head and wing were torn off. The woman has confessed to tearing the bird and has indicated that she threw it into the bushes before the police arrived.

The detained woman was born in 1988 and has previously been convicted of possession and use of drugs.

In connection with the incident, criminal proceedings have been initiated pursuant to Section 230, Paragraph two of the Criminal Law – for cruel treatment of an animal, as a result of which it has died or been mutilated, if it has been committed in a public place. Such an offense is punishable by up to five years’ imprisonment or a temporary custodial sentence, or forced labor, or a fine.

During the investigation, the police will explain the woman’s motives and her psychiatric examination will be carried out.
