Which team will face the Portland Timbers in the MLS Cup Final?

We will find out later this afternoon following the Eastern Association final between Philadelphia Union and New York City FC. This clash is ongoing at TVA Sports 2.

The Union finished the regular season second in the standings with 54 points. The NYCFC, on the other hand, finished it in fourth place with 51 points.

In the first round, the Philadelphia club needed the extra periods to tame the New York Red Bulls 1-0. They then used the penalty shootout to rule out Nashville SC.

The team is probably a little tired, but they have allowed only one goal in two playoff games.

In addition, Jim Curtin has built up a strong midfield set-up which makes life very difficult for any opponent.

A big absentee

In the New York camp, we started the playoffs with a relatively easy 2-0 victory in Atlanta.

The big surprise came on Tuesday night, when New York opened the scoring in the third minute at Gillette Stadium against the best team of the regular season, the New England Revolution.

This one quickly equaled the mark. The two teams traded a goal in overtime and the NYCFC settled the shootout with one hand behind their back.

The victory cost New York dearly, as Valentin Castellanos received two yellow cards and is therefore suspended on Sunday. He is MLS’s leading scorer in 2021 with 19 goals. He also scored in each of the team’s two playoff games.
