Deputy General Secretary UN Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths said on Friday he was not optimistic about the possibility of a ceasefire and halt to hostilities in Ukraine.
As writes “Voice of America“, Griffiths gave a grim assessment of the prospects for peace in Ukraine.
It is noted that earlier the UN Deputy Secretary General met in Moscow with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov.
“I think it won’t be easy because both sides, as far as I know, don’t trust each other. I’m not optimistic,” Griffiths said.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres sent Griffiths to Moscow and Kyiv to explore the possibility of establishing a ceasefire that could form the basis for negotiations to end the war.
Griffiths suggested that it would not be easy to achieve any kind of truce, and it would not happen now.
“Obviously we all want this to happen. But as you know, especially being here, [в Украине]It won’t happen right away,” he said.
