A tour to know the catacombs of New York

Beyond the exciting and popular attractions that NY has to offer its millions of annual visitors, in its entrails it houses an enigmatic and historical attraction that dates back more than 200 years: the catacombs.

To enter this place, it is necessary to start a 60-90 minute tour by candlelight through the Basilica of the Old Cathedral of Saint Patrick in Lower Manhattan, before descending into the underground galleries.

The walk allows you to discover the secrets of the Cathedral, appreciate its ancient Henry Erban pipe organ and walk through areas that are normally prohibited by the general public, such as cemeteries and certain corridors of the catacombs.

Visit

Inside you can see the crypts and remains of iconic New Yorkers who marked the history of the United States such as those of the Delmonico family, a restaurant clan that founded the most legendary homonymous places in the city; Abraham Lincoln’s general and right-hand man, Thomas Eckert; of John Connolly, the first resident bishop of New York and of the politician John Kelly of Tammany Hall.

It also shows part of the locations that were used in the film of the The Godfather inside the Basilica, the surroundings of the well-known area of Little Italy and Soho.

Prices and schedules

Normally the guided tours to the catacombs range from $ 35 dollars per person, but with the official pass to the main attractions of the cosmopolitan city, New York Pass, there is the possibility that access is free, it is only necessary to take into account a tip for the guide.

There are three scheduled departures per day: at 11 am, 1 pm and at 3 pm. Free or with a fee, tickets are purchased at the Ticket Kiosk located at 32 Prince Street from 10 am to 4 pm, the group of at least 15 people meet there to start the trip.

The excursions are completely in English, minors must always be held by an adult and it is necessary to arrive 10 minutes before leaving.
