A Tough Winter: Vilcane’s Hospitalization and Journey to Recovery

Vilcane remembers the winter when her husband Yuriy Skops left and she ended up in the hospital. “It was a tough time. It started with the fact that I broke my hip. I’m a piper, and when I go out to pipe, I look up at the sky and count the stars. There are paths everywhere, but I stepped into the grass in the dark, slipped, and – babah! Both legs in the air, and I broke a healthy, strong bone.

But I was lucky with the fast ones – they could have taken me to Talsi or Tukuma, but they decided to take me to the 2nd hospital in Riga. I was semi-conscious when I was taken away. And thanks to the surgeon Leon Zariņas!

When we got to the hospital, one surgeon said: no, I will not operate, she will bleed out.

My surgeon was silent, silent, and then said, well, I will prepare him for three days, and the operation will be on Monday. It was a very difficult three and a half hour operation. Thank God and doctor Zarins! A difficult time that I don’t want to remember.

Then the story with my husband began, and it lasted a year. In fact, I was also ready for Jur’s death, I let him go even before that. I don’t want to look back – it was very difficult, but it’s over,” Vilcāne reveals.
