A total of 47 people have received a transplant thanks to the 22 organ donations that have been registered in Castilla-La Mancha in the first five months of this year, as reported today by the head of the Autonomous Transplant Coordination Unit from Castilla-La Mancha, Dr. María José Sánchez Carretero.

Sánchez Carretero has offered this information at the traditional press conference organized by ALCER Toledo to commemorate the National Organ Donor Day, in which he has been accompanied by its president, Juan Carlos García del Villar; the provincial delegate for Health, Rocío Rodríguez Martín; and the Councilor for Social Services, Equality, the Elderly and People with Disabilities of Toledo, Ana Belén Abellán.

With the celebration of this anniversary, the entities that make up the Union of Solid Organ Transplantation pay tribute to donors and family members throughout the national territory, in addition to raising awareness in society about the importance of organ donation for people who are waiting for a transplant. The motto chosen for this year is “To donate is to love. Your solidarity gives us life ”.

The head of the Autonomous Transplant Coordination Unit has indicated that, from January to May of this year, Castilla-La Mancha has added a total of 22 organ donations.

The largest number of donations have been accounted for in the Toledo University Hospital Complex, with ten, to which are added the seven registered in the Albacete University Hospital Complex, three in the Guadalajara University Hospital and two in the General University Hospital of Real city.

Fifty percent of the total organ donations have been multi-organ; 38.46 percent have also donated tissues; and three tissue-only donors have been registered. Likewise, 42 corneas have been extracted, most of them (18) at the Toledo hospital.

In addition, and as a result of the work that has been carried out in recent years to obtain donors with a stopped heart or asystole, so far this year there have been seven donations of this type in the region (5 in Albacete, 1 in Guadalajara and 1 in Toledo).

According to data collected by the Autonomous Transplant Unit, the average age of donors is 60 years and 59 percent of them have died from a stroke.

On the other hand, during the first five months of this year, a total of 24 kidney transplants have been performed in our region, sixty percent more than in the same period of the previous year. Of the total number of transplants performed, 17 correspond to the Albacete University Hospital Complex and 7 to Toledo.

In this sense, Dr. Sánchez Carretero stressed that “despite the fact that during these months difficulties have still had to be overcome due to the pandemic, it has been possible to maintain the transplant activity, thanks to the generosity of the Castilian families -manchegas and the involvement of health professionals ”.

Commemorating Organ Donor Day is important “because it allows us to repeat once again the call to raise awareness in society with the decision to authorize organ donation” to help our fellow citizens gain years and quality of life, he pointed out. , and thanked ALCER for their work in raising awareness.
