Within days, the disease would have infected seven people already, killing three. The World Health Organization is ready to mobilize by sending doctors, drugs and equipment needed in an emergency.
The epidemic that struck West Africa in the four-year period 2013-2016 reported 28 thousand infected, of which just under half (11,300) died.
Starting from Guinea, the virus spread to nearby Liberia and Sierra Leone, then infecting outside Africa: Ebola deaths were also recorded in the USA, the United Kingdom, Spain, with one victim also in Italy.
It will be the task of the WHO to bring a stock of half a million vaccines to Guinea as soon as possible. According to some media sources, the first victim of the new wave would be a nurse at whose funeral, on February 1st, new infections would have occurred, with all the recurring symptoms of Ebola: diarrhea, vomiting, bleeding, high fever.
The Guinean outbreak was confirmed as Ebola by the Minister of Health, Remy Lama, after the first cases had presented the typical symptoms. People who came into contact with the infected were promptly quarantined.
The virus was discovered in 1976, however, until 2013, the deaths were “only” 1600. Nothing compared to the 11,300 of 2013-2016. Since then, another eleven focolare centers have followed one another, the last of which was extinguished in Congo last November, with 55 deaths. [L.M.]
