A team of researchers from the University Medical Center Freiburg and the CibSS Excellence Group have demonstrated that an intense inflammatory response can develop in the central nervous system in the brain. COVID-19 Patients involving different immune cells around the vascular system and in brain tissue. The team led by Professor Dr. Marco Prinz and Dr. Bertram Bingsch, published his findings in the journal Immunity.
“Although there is already evidence that the central nervous system is involved in the Covid-19 virus, the level of inflammation in the brain surprised us,” lead author Henrik Saly was quoted as saying by the University of Freiburg website. “Specifically, many of the microglial nodules we normally detect could not be found in the healthy brain,” said lead author Dr. Marius Schwabenland is quoted as saying.
Using a new measurement method, they identified different cell types as well as virus-infected cells and their spatial interactions in previously unseen detail.
“Even compared to other inflammatory brain diseases, the inflammatory response induced by COVID-19 is unique and represents a severe disruption of the brain’s immune response,” said Dr. Prins as quoted.
