A severe storm causes “catastrophic damage” in two Texas schools

Angela Reyes

(CNN) – A strong storm that hit a Texas city on Monday caused extensive damage to two schools.

“I’ve been in the district for 30 years and this is the most catastrophic damage I’ve ever witnessed,” Jacksboro Independent School District Superintendent Brad Burnett told CNN affiliate WFAA.

Both Jacksboro High School and Jacksboro Elementary were damaged.

“We are very blessed to have facilities that were designed to withstand a storm, the storm damage that we received. I know our students were safe in our facility and I am thankful for that,” he added.

Burnett said there were no injuries, WFAA reported.

The superintendent said the elementary school students got “pretty emotional” when they walked out of the school and saw the storm damage.

Burnett, who was in the administration building, said that structure did not sustain much damage.

Jacksboro is about 90 km northwest of Fort Worth. At 4:30 pm a tornado warning ended there.

According to the National Weather Service’s Storm Prediction Center, there were nine reports of tornado activity in central Texas near Austin: six in Williamson County, two in Caldwell County and one in Bastrop County.

Authorities in Round Rock, Williamson County, said a reported tornado moved in around 6 p.m. Central Time. “There are reports of structural damage to multiple homes and businesses. Please continue to stay off the roads, seek shelter and follow local news for the latest weather updates,” the Round Rock Police Department said in a message on Twitter.

Round Rock is about 15 miles north of Austin.

The National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for parts of central and north Texas through 10 p.m. Central time Monday. About 14 million residents were under notice, including people from Austin, Dallas and San Antonio.

A few tornadoes have the potential to be intense (EF-2 and larger), and the storms could produce hail up to 3 inches in diameter and gusts of 30 mph, forecasters said. The Storm Prediction Center also received reports of possible tornadoes in Lee County, Texas, and Marshall County, Oklahoma.
