A seventh-degree earthquake struck Haiti, warning of the tsunami threat

The focus of the strong earthquake was at a depth of ten kilometers and the epicenter about 150 kilometers west of the metropolis. The tremors were also evident in the neighboring Dominican Republic, which, along with Haiti, lies on the Caribbean island of Hispaniola.

The quake struck at 08:30 local time (14:30 CEST). The quakes caused panic, people in the metropolis were running out of the houses on the street, the EFE agency said.

Haiti was hit by a strong earthquake in January 2010, when seven-magnitude earthquakes destroyed Port-au-Prince and the surrounding area, killing 300,000 people. The same number of people were injured and 1.5 million people lost their roofs.

Haiti is the poorest country in the United States, and in the last more than a year, it has been plagued not only by the deep economic crisis but also by the political crisis and the violence of armed gangs who profit from kidnappings or drug and arms trafficking.

The power struggle may also have been the subject of the assassination of President Jovelel Moïse, who was killed on the night of July 7 at home in the suburbs of the Haitian capital.

His wife was also injured in the attack, but no one else, so his protection was suspected. Hours after the assassination, police arrested a group of Colombian mercenaries. The murder has not yet been clarified.
