The case is up to date
The scandal, which is now riding like a mare the Swedish police, dates back to 2015, according to the revelations of the Swedish newspaper The Espresso.
Then Löfving, who was then head of the Police’s National Operations Department (NOA), reportedly hired Linda Staaf – who had no police experience – in the position of head of national intelligence. The two then began a relationship.
According to The Espresso 21 other people with extensive police experience had applied for the position in a previous posting.
In the latest announcement, however, only Linda Staaf applied for the position and got the job. Then it was only Löfving who made the decision on the appointment, writes the newspaper.
Löfving is now being investigated for gross negligence in connection with the employment. This is what the Swedish prosecutors write in a press release Monday.
Deputy Prosecutor Bengt Åsbäck has already spoken The Espresso that the relationship between the two in relation to the employment relationship has been investigated previously.
– It was about how Linda Staaf got her job at Noa and whether there was an affair between her and Noa boss Mats Löfving, she told the newspaper.
Staaf has previously confirmed to Expressen that she and Löfving were in a relationship when he was her superior in Noa.
Expressen tried to contact Löfving in relation to the revelations, without success.

In 2020, Löfving left his position in Noa to become chief of police for the Stockholm region of Sweden. In the fall of 2022, it was decided that Staaf would step down from his position as intelligence chief and join the Justice Ministry’s police unit.
However, the scandal didn’t stop there. In December 2021, Löfving was denounced for a number of matters which include threats and harassment of police security chief Ari Stensmann. The review was submitted after Stensmann spoke to Linda Staaf, she revealed The Espresso last week.
At the time, the special unit decided not to launch an investigation following the report.
Monday, writes the newspaper that there is yet another review of Löfving’s appearance towards Staaf.

– Many men resent a woman gaining power and influence in an industry dominated by men, she told the paper, adding that Löfving exposed her to “disrespectful behaviour”.
In an interview with television 4 Staaf lashed out at suspicions against him on Monday.
– I approached the head of security (Ari Stensmann, ed), because I felt exposed. She ended up with me as a woman singled out and humiliated in public, including on social media, she tells the channel.
He says the following about his appointment as intelligence chief:
– I applied for a job, but then I’m the one who has to stay here to defend myself for an appointment where I haven’t made any decisions. I haven’t been busy, she tells the channel.
According to TV 4, Swedish police director Anders Thornberg has launched an investigation to ensure a “complete review” of the information that recently surfaced.
