Denny Hamlin won two consecutive Daytona 500 victories on Monday after a race marked by a terrible accident that resulted in the hospitalization of veteran Ryan Newman.

Joe Gibbs Racing driver Hamlin continued his momentum in 2019 with the third victory of his career in Daytona, Florida, becoming the first driver to win the first stage of the NASCAR season since Sterling Marlin in 1995 .

Several ambulances dispatched to the runway

Hamlin’s celebrations, however, were overshadowed by the accident on the last lap which resulted in the hospitalization of Newman, 42. The Roush Fenway Racing driver’s Ford Mustang led the last lap but skidded, hit the protective wall and ended up on the roof before igniting.

No information was immediately available on Newman’s condition. Several ambulances were dispatched to the track to support the driver at the end of the race.
