Alexandria – Mohamed Amer:

A pharmacist attempted suicide by taking 30 antidepressant pills while sitting in a cafe in the Abu Youssef area, west of Alexandria, while his wife confirmed that he suffers from a mental illness that he is being treated for, and that he had previously attempted suicide more than once.

Major General Khaled Al-Barawi, Assistant Minister and Director of Alexandria Security, received a notification from the Dekheila Police Station that a notification had been received from the main university hospital of the arrival of the so-called “Imad A.M.L.” 37 years old, a pharmacist, who was infected with an allegation of ingesting an unknown substance, and he cannot be interrogated.

The officers of the department moved, and by asking the person called “Wael.Al.,” 34 years old, a worker in a café at 17 “Alexandria-Matrouh Al-Sahili” road in the Abu Youssef area, the residence of the injured man, he decided that while the aforementioned was sitting in the café at his place of work, he felt severe fatigue and abdominal pain.

He pointed out that the patient was in possession of empty drug tapes for various drugs, “Night Calm, the hypnotic – Pravamax – Tryptizol” for the treatment of depression, with a total of 30 tablets, and he called the ambulance for him and transferred him to the aforementioned hospital.

According to the investigations, the pharmacist’s wife called “S.H.A.D.” 31 years old, owner of a grocery store, residing at the same address and her original place of residence in Cairo Governorate, came and explained that she was in Cairo Governorate to visit her family.

She added that her husband suffers from mental illness, “severe depression”, from which he is treated in a center located in the Fifth District, Heliopolis, Cairo Governorate, and he has previously attempted suicide more than once in the same manner.

In the investigations, the wife suggested that her husband took the medication pills found on empty cassettes in his possession, all at once while he was sitting in the café, and she did not accuse anyone of causing that.

The blanks of 3 cassettes of the drugs seized were kept in his possession, and the necessary report was issued regarding the incident, and the Public Prosecution office initiated the investigation.

The state is working to provide support for mental patients through more than one hotline to help those who have psychological problems or desire to commit suicide, most notably the hotline of the General Secretariat for Mental Health, at the Ministry of Health and Population, to receive psychological inquiries and psychological support, and support those wishing to commit suicide, through a number 08008880700, 0220816831, all day long.

The National Council for Mental Health has also designated a hotline to receive psychological inquiries at 20818102.

And the Egyptian Dar Al Iftaa affirmed that suicide is a major sin and a crime against the soul and the law, and the person who commits suicide is not an infidel, and the guilt of this crime should not be minimized, as well as not finding justifications and creating a state of sympathy for this matter, but rather dealing with it as a mental illness that can be treated through specialists.
