Over a million dollars. That’s the price of a pair of Nike Air Yeezy 1 sneakers, worn by American rapper Kanye West. It was Sotheby’s, the American multinational auction company, which estimated this staggering price for a private sale.
This means that neither the buyer nor the final price will be known publicly, unless the buyer decides to disclose. This unique model, is the very first pair of Yeezy presented publicly at the feet of Kanye West, during the Grammy Awards 2008. The pair for sale belongs to Ryan Chang, a collector of “sneakers”. The sneakers are the rarest on the market and will be presented in Hong Kong from April 16 to 21.
The Air Yeezy 1 was finally launched in 2009, in a limited series, followed by the Air Yeezy 2 in 2012. The following year, Kanye West ended his partnership with Nike, believing that his share of revenue was insufficient. He then associated with Adidas in 2014, to create a dedicated Yeezy brand. According to an internal UBS bank note, cited by Bloomberg, this immense popular success generated nearly $ 1.7 billion in revenue in 2020. If he is not the designer of the Air Yeezy 1, Kanye West has had a lot of influence on the design of the shoe.
In recent years, the record for a pair of athletic shoes has been broken several times. In August 2020, a pair of Nike’s Air Jordan 1s was sold for $ 615,000 following a sale organized by Christie’s.
