American clinical nutritionist Vicki Petersen talks about the main causes of heartburn and gives tips on how to protect yourself from stomach pain. The expert recommendations were published by the publication Digital Journal.

Smokers, those who consume coffee and greasy spicy food, as well as people who are under constant stress, most often suffer from heartburn. Also at risk are obese and hiatal hernia patients.

According to the expert, smoking and frequent coffee consumption can provoke heartburn, since caffeine and nicotine have the ability to weaken the lower esophageal sphincter, whose main task is to limit the passage of food from the stomach back into the esophagus.

Overweight people often have weakened abdominal muscles, and as a result, the diaphragm, which is actively involved in the work of the digestive tract, also suffers. Their malfunctioning leads to digestive problems and leads to heartburn.

As for stress, when the body is in a constant state of restlessness, it acts on the “fight or flight” principle. This is incompatible with the proper digestion of food.

And the constant consumption of fatty foods burdens the stomach, liver and gall bladder, which in turn also leads to heartburn. Petersen also adds that a hiatal hernia causes stomach acid to back up into the esophagus, which is very painful.

To manage heartburn, you should eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly. In addition, you should not go to bed after eating – your stomach should have time to digest the entire dinner.

Another doctor’s recommendation is to exercise on an empty stomach, and after eating it is best to take a walk so that your lunch is digested faster.
