A New StarCraft ?: Blizzard Veterans To Create The “Next Great Strategy Game

The real time strategy video games were catapulted more than two decades ago with hits like StarCraft, Warcraft and Age of Empires; However, it has been a long time since a fresh title has appeared with the legacy of those successes that transformed both the industry and esports. Now, some Blizzard veterans have decided to create the ‘next great experience’ within the category.

These are the developers at Uncapped Games, a studio made up of former Blizzard developers. In a recent interview, its leaders spoke about their plans for the near future, including creating the ‘next great game in the genre of strategy’.

David Kim, the lead designer, revealed to GamesIndustry that the studio’s goals are to focus the work of eight people to “give the next great game in the genre a chance. RTS (real time strategy) ”. This group is made up of figures such as Jason Hughes and engineer Zhongshan Zhang, known for their work at Blizzard.

Uncapped Games is a relatively new study that has been funded by the tech giant Tencent. For the project in question, they will be supported by the sister houses Lightspeed & Quantum Studios (creators of the mobile version of PUBG).

During 2020, Blizzard announced that updates to StarCraft II, a title that appeared in 2010, was coming to an end after a decade of constant patches and new content. At Uncapped, there is some hope that the most die-hard fans of the RTS genre will be interested in their new product, in the absence of recent releases.

Many members of Uncapped have already worked on elements that this new title would bring while they continued to carry out tasks for StarCraft II. Jason Hugues, the studio’s lead producer, said his goal is to keep the focus of the game manageable, in clear relation to interests beyond an experience that meets basic standards, such as microtransactions and alternative business models.

“Just focus on making a great game RTS in order to PC, and not worry about other factors. The measure of success is if we get to have a great game, “said the producer. For now, the project still lacks a title and much more than an approximate launch date.
