A new earthquake hits southeastern Turkey, causing casualties

An earthquake hits the Malatya region in southeastern Turkey, killing one person and injuring 69 others, and rescue teams are heading to the destroyed buildings.

  • Part of the effects of the earthquake that hit Turkey and Syria this month

Turkish authorities reported that an earthquake struck the southeast of the country today, Monday, killing one person and injuring 69 others, in addition to the collapse of some buildings.

Today’s earthquake came three weeks after a violent earthquake that killed more than 50,000 people in Turkey and Syria.

Yunus Sezer, head of the Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), said in a press conference that search and rescue teams have been deployed in five buildings.

The European-Mediterranean Center for Seismology estimated the strength of today’s earthquake that struck the Malatya region in southeastern Turkey at 5.2 degrees, but AFAD estimated it at 5.6 degrees.

The center said that the quake was at a depth of five kilometers, while media reports said that two people were trapped under the rubble of a building.

Earlier, a Turkish minister said that Turkey had detained 184 people on suspicion of involvement in the collapse of buildings as a result of the earthquakes that occurred earlier this month, adding that the scope of investigations was being expanded.
