Persistent hiccups are also one of the symptoms of coronavirus, doctors showed in a study published in The American Journal of Emergency Medicine.
Their research described the case of a 62-year-old Chicago resident who went to hospital in April with hiccups that had lasted for four days.
According to the source, the examination carried out revealed that the patient suffered from diabetes, hypertension and ischemic heart disease. In addition, tests for Covid-19 were positive and x-rays showed lung damage. At the same time, he did not have the typical symptoms of the coronavirus such as a form of cough or sore throat.
The study clarified that the man was treated with hydroxychloroquine, considered a popular drug against the coronavirus, before the WHO deemed it ineffective.
“To our knowledge, this is the first report of persistent hiccups in a patient with a positive result for Covid-19 in the literature on emergency medicine,” the study said.
The authors urged their colleagues to pay particular attention to patients complaining of constant hiccups and noted that the coronavirus was exhibiting increasingly atypical symptoms.
