a magnesium intake to lower the risk of fatal coronary artery disease?

Women with high magnesium diets are at lower risk of life-threatening coronary artery disease after menopause, according to a new American study.

The search looks at 153,569 postmenopausal women, elderly at the start of study 50 to 79 years old and asked about their magnesium consumption via a questionnaire. This sample was followed for more than 10 years to count cases of coronary heart disease and sudden and fatal heart attacks.

Protective effect of magnesium?

Published in the journal Journal of Women’s Health, the study makes it possible to observe an inverse association between the consumption of magnesium and the risk of deadly coronary artery disease at the postmenopausal women.

After taking into account various factors, the researchers observed that the risk was higher in women who consumed the least amount of magnesium (189 mg / day).

The risk of coronary artery disease and fatal heart attack increases at menopause.

Susan G. Kornstein, physician and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Women’s Health, comments: “If the results of this study are confirmed, more research is needed to verify whether taking magnesium supplements in women at high risk can reduce fatal coronary artery disease.“.

Nuts, hazelnuts, bananas, whole grains and dark chocolate are particularly rich in magnesium.
