A lot of snow is waiting for Christmas Eve: check how your knees should be cleaned

The maintenance of roads of state importance is carried out in accordance with normative requirements, states Lithuanian Road Administration (LAKD). As it is not possible to remove snow from all maintained roads at the same time and sprinkle them with anti-slip agents, winter maintenance work is divided into 5 different levels of maintenance according to the intensity of traffic and the importance of the roads. High-traffic roads connecting major cities or settlements are first cleaned and / or scattered, and declining roads are maintained as a matter of priority.

Where to clean the fastest?

Level I supervision. Road maintenance services are on duty around the clock on these roads, cleaning in the snow and scattering at any time of the day in the event of snow or sleet. The road must be cleaned and sprinkled no later than 2 hours. after it stops snowing and / or blowing. When the weather is normal, there should be no snow on the road surface. When snowing and / or blowing, the thickness of snow on the carriageway may not exceed 4 cm.

At the first level of maintenance, the following roads are maintained: A1 Vilnius – Kaunas – Klaipėda, „Via Baltica“, A19 Vilnius Southern Bypass, A2 Vilnius – Panevėžys and the section of the road A16 Vilnius – Prienai – Marijampolė from Vilnius to Trakai.

You don’t have to expect “shaved” roads when it snows

Level II supervision. At this level, most of the main roads and the most intensive roads in the country are maintained. Road maintenance services are on duty on these roads, clearing snow and spreading anti-slip materials from 4 am to 10 pm. These roads must be cleaned and sprinkled after no more than 3 working hours. when the snow stops.

When the weather conditions are normal, there may only be occasional snow furrows on the road surface. When snowing and / or blowing, the thickness of snow on the carriageway may not exceed 7 cm. In the morning, on slippery roads, these roads must be sprinkled for the first time before 7 p.m. Traffic may be interrupted for up to 4 hours in particularly difficult meteorological conditions.

Traffic on national roads may be disrupted

Part of the country roads and the most intensive district roads are maintained according to the maintenance level III. Road maintenance services are on duty on these roads, clearing snow and spreading anti-slip materials from 4 am to 7 pm. These roads must be cleaned and sprinkled after no more than 4 working hours. when the snow stops. When the weather conditions are normal, there may be no more than 2 cm of snow on the road surface.

When snowing and / or blowing, the thickness of snow on the carriageway may not exceed 10 cm. In the morning, on slippery roads, these roads must be sprinkled for the first time before 8 p.m. Traffic can be interrupted for up to 8 hours in particularly difficult meteorological conditions.

National and regional roads with a traffic volume of less than 1000 cars per day are maintained in accordance with maintenance level IV. Road maintenance services are on duty on these roads, clearing snow and spreading anti-slip materials from 6 am to 6 pm.

These roads must be cleaned and sprinkled after no more than 6 working hours. when the snow stops. When the weather is normal, there can be up to 3 cm of snow on the road surface. When snowing and / or blowing, the thickness of snow on the carriageway may not exceed 10 cm.

In the morning, on slippery roads, these roads must be sprinkled for the first time before 12 noon. Traffic may be interrupted for up to 10 hours in particularly difficult meteorological conditions.

The salt is spread only through the flake

Level V maintenance must ensure a minimum level of traffic quality and roadworthiness. Under this level of supervision, most regional roads of national importance are maintained. They are open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Road sections at this level of maintenance shall only be spread or coarse ice and / or ice roughening measures shall be applied in the presence of extremely slippery road surfaces, ie in the presence of rainfall and / or the formation of a wet ice layer on the road surface.

The permissible thickness of loose snow in normal weather conditions must not exceed 10 cm. When snowing and / or blowing, the thickness of snow on the carriageway may not exceed 15 cm. Traffic can be interrupted for up to 24 hours in particularly difficult meteorological conditions.

Where to check how your road is managed?

The established quality requirements for maintenance levels do not apply only in particularly difficult weather conditions, which means that in particularly difficult conditions, roads may not meet the requirements for maintenance levels,
ie, for example, on maintenance level I roads, the thickness of snow on the carriageway during snowfall and / or blowing may not exceed 4 cm, and the quality requirements for maintenance levels do not apply in particularly difficult conditions, ie there may be more snow on roads .

Do not apply when the condition of the spreading material worsens the condition of the pavement (eg heavy snowfall and / or snow, snow, etc.).
